The Classic of Southern Mountains, second section: its head is Mount Gui... A bird lives there, shaped like an owl with human hands. Its cry is like a moan. Its name is Zhu, and its call is its own name. When it appears, the county exiles many scholars.
An owl with human hands. On paper it is bizarre. Sit in front of an owl in a cage and it is not bizarre at all.
Owl feet are not like other birds' feet.
Most birds have three toes forward and one back. Owls are different: the fourth toe can reverse. Forward when it wants, backward when it wants. Zygodactyl.
Perched, they grip with two toes forward and two back, like pliers. Striking, all four rotate forward and the talons drive in together.
And an owl's foot, from tarsus to toe, is covered in dense feathers with only the tips of the claws showing. The whole foot reads as a ball of fluff with a few curved black hooks protruding.
That ball of fluff, those few gripping digits, that motion of closing —
A person watches an owl take a mouse, lift its foot, slowly close, turn the mouse, close again. That is the same motion a human hand makes when it picks something up and turns it over to look.
"Human hands" records exactly that.
Then "its cry is like a moan." The character means numbness, palsy, and by extension a low, indistinct groan.
Which is what owls sound like. The eagle owl gives a deep "hoo—" with long intervals. Scops owls give short runs of "kup-kup". Long-eared owls give a sighing "hooo—".
Night, mountain forest, one long sigh. There is no high frequency in it at all. Low frequencies travel far in valleys, and they are hard to localize.
Then: "when it appears, the county exiles many scholars."
Exile. The word is fang — to cast out.
Why would an owl mean somebody is about to be deported?
Three layers.
First, owls are ill-omened. From the Book of Songs onward: "Owl, owl, you have taken my young; do not destroy my house." Owls call at night, the call sounds like weeping, and they take rodents and birds — and chicks. A farm family hears an owl, and next morning the chickens are short. The association is immediate.
Second, the name zhu sounds like Zhu — as in Danzhu, son of Yao, who was exiled by Shun. Later commentators linked the bird to him: Zhu is the soul of Danzhu, a banished man turned into a night-calling bird, and wherever it flies, that county will banish people.
Third, and most concrete: exile had a season.
Executions waited for after harvest. Exile usually moved in spring and early summer, because the roads had to be passable for a long march. And owls nest in spring, when they call most.
April to June: owls every night in the village. Spring: a constable leading a man away.
One spring the owl calls, that summer a man is marched off. Next spring the owl calls again. After three years the two things are welded together in memory.
So the truth behind the entry may be very plain: every spring the owls are loudest, and every spring men are taken away. The bird does not know what it is forecasting. The people believe it does.
And Mount Gui stands at the head of the second southern section, facing the Liuhuang, looking north to Zhu Pi. This is mountain country, and it lies on the exile routes — south to Lingnan, west to central Guizhou, both classical destinations for the banished.
One mountain, one road, a crowd of night birds, and a procession of people who walked past and did not come back.
"Many scholars exiled" — the entry is a description of that road.
