The Classic of Central Mountains: thirty li east is Mount Feng. A beast lives there, shaped like an ape, red eyes, red mouth, yellow body. Its name is Yonghe. When it appears, the state is seized by great fear. Mount Feng is unusual in the central classic: it holds nine bronze bells that ring by themselves at the first frost. That detail marks Feng as a place that responds — the sky shifts, and the mountain answers. Yonghe lives there. Ape-shaped, red eyes, red mouth, yellow body. Start with color. Some primates do have red faces — macaques, golden snub-nosed monkeys, both face and rump. But red eyes and a red mouth are something else: albinism, or a mutation, or simply extreme congestion. A yellow-furred monkey with red eyes and a red mouth does not look right. Then: when it appears, the state is seized by great fear. Great fear. Not flood, not drought, not war. Panic. This is the only omen in the entire book whose outcome is fear itself. Other beasts predict natural disasters. Yonghe predicts a social-psychological one. The distinction is precise. Panic is a real disaster. Nothing has to happen — people only have to believe something will. Then come the stampedes, the hoarding, the flight, the riots. Many historical panics ended with nothing having occurred, and the death toll was still real. Whoever wrote this understood that. Some disasters do not start in the sky. They start in people. Look at the bells again. Nine of them, ringing at frost. Bells make sound; frost is the qi of killing. A mountain that rings by itself, inhabited by a beast that causes panic — sound and fear belong to the same system. The red eyes and red mouth may simply be what "seeing an ill omen" looks like: at night, a pair of red eyes watching from a tree. You do not know what it is. You know you have to run. One person runs, ten run, the whole city runs. That is great fear. A yellow monkey with red eyes, sitting on a bell mountain that rings itself. It did nothing. It was only seen.

Gunung Feng ada binatang macam beruk — mata merah, mulut merah, badan kuning. Namanya Yonghe. "Muncul, seluruh negeri panik." Ini satu-satunya petanda dalam kitab yang akibatnya "ketakutan", bukan banjir, kemarau atau perang — tapi panik orang ramai.

Núi Phong có thú hình vượn — mắt đỏ, mỏ đỏ, mình vàng. Tên Ung Hòa. "Xuất hiện thì cả nước đại khủng hoảng." Đây là điềm duy nhất trong sách mà kết quả là "nỗi sợ", không phải lụt, hạn hay chiến tranh — mà là hoảng loạn của dân chúng.

Gunung Feng ada binatang mirip kera — mata merah, mulut merah, badan kuning. Namanya Yonghe. "Muncul, seluruh negeri panik." Ini satu-satunya pertanda di kitab yang akibatnya "ketakutan", bukan banjir, kekeringan, atau perang — tapi panik massa.
