The Classic of Eastern Mountains: three hundred li south is Mount Yan, rich in gold and jade. A beast lives there — a pig's body with a human face, yellow fur, red tail. Its name is He Yu. Its cry is a baby's. It eats people, and it also eats insects and snakes. When it appears, the world floods. Mount Yan is a treasure mountain. He Yu lives on it: pig body, human face, yellow coat, red tail, baby's cry, man-eater. And when it shows itself, water rises everywhere. Start with the most uncomfortable part: pig body, human face. The nine-tailed fox's cry is "like a baby," and it uses that to lure people. So does He Yu. A baby crying in the grass — what do you do? You walk toward it. That is how it hunts. Then: "it also eats insects and snakes." That line looks flat. It is actually the most concrete thing in the entry. What comes after a flood? Snakes. Water fills the burrows, the snakes climb, and they end up where people live. What else comes after a flood? Insects — mosquitoes, flies, locusts, everything that breeds in standing water. Flood and snakes and insects are one package: water first, then snakes, then disease. He Yu eats insects and snakes. It cleans up after the flood. So read the entry again: a mountain beast, human-faced, pig-bodied, crying like an infant, eating people and also eating the snakes and insects that swarm after high water, whose appearance predicts flooding. This is not a monster's file. It is a record of a disaster chain. The ancients compressed the whole sequence — flood, snakes, plague — into one animal. It brings the disaster (when it appears, floods), it processes the disaster's by-products (eats snakes and insects), and it eats people along the way. Mount Yan is full of gold and jade. He Yu lives there. A treasure mountain, a snake-eating pig-faced man, and a flood that has not arrived yet.
